Car insurance in Louisiana costs an average of $99 per month for state minimum coverage and $271 per month for full coverage in 2026, among the highest rates in the nation.

Louisiana is an at-fault state, and all drivers must carry minimum liability limits of 15/30/25. The state's "No Pay, No Play" law sharply limits what uninsured drivers can recover after a crash. A wave of insurance reform laws passed in 2025 is aimed at bringing rates down.

How much is car insurance in Louisiana in 2026?

Car insurance in Louisiana costs an average of $99 per month for minimum coverage and $271 per month for full coverage. Both figures rank among the most expensive in the country.

"Full coverage" isn't a single, standardized policy. It generally refers to a policy that combines the state-required liability coverage with collision and comprehensive coverage, which pays for damage to your own vehicle. Exact inclusions vary by insurer, so it’s best to confirm what's in your policy before comparing prices.

Your individual rate depends on your driving history, age, vehicle, ZIP code, and coverage selections. Luva shows quotes matched to your own profile, so you can see where you actually fall.

Why does Louisiana car insurance cost more than in other states?

There are several primary factors driving Louisiana's high auto insurance rates:

  • Auto litigation environment: State officials point to Louisiana's auto litigation environment as a leading cost driver.¹

  • Uninsured drivers: Insurers price in the state's uninsured drivers, whose costs shift onto insured policyholders.

  • Severe weather: Hurricane and flood exposure raise comprehensive claims across the southern parishes.

  • High traffic density: Dense traffic in metro New Orleans and Baton Rouge contributes to high accident frequency.

The state projects that the 2025–2026 reforms will put downward pressure on rates over time. In fact, reducing lawsuit costs was the stated purpose of the 2025 reform package.²

What is the minimum car insurance required in Louisiana?

Louisiana's Compulsory Motor Vehicle Liability Security Law requires every registered vehicle to carry liability insurance with limits of at least 15/30/25.³ Liability coverage pays for injuries and property damage you cause to others — it does not cover your own vehicle.

Louisiana insurers automatically include uninsured motorist bodily injury (UM) coverage with new policies. You can reject it, but the rejection must be made in writing.⁴

When is it worth carrying more than the state minimum liability coverage?

It’s generally worth considering higher limits when a driver has assets, income, or future earnings they want to protect. A common industry practice is to select limits based on what the driver could reasonably afford to lose in a serious liability claim rather than simply choosing the legal minimum.

Keep in mind that Louisiana's $15,000-per-person bodily injury limit is one of the lowest in the nation. A single serious injury can exhaust it quickly, which is why many Louisiana drivers buy higher limits plus UM coverage.

Is Louisiana a no-fault or at-fault state?

Louisiana is an at-fault (tort) state, meaning the driver who causes an accident is financially responsible for the resulting damages. The at-fault driver's liability coverage pays the other party's medical bills and repair costs up to the policy limits.

One important change took effect January 1, 2026: Louisiana moved from a pure comparative fault system to a modified comparative fault standard. A driver found 51% or more at fault for their own injuries can no longer recover any damages, aligning with the majority of states.⁵

What is Louisiana's "No Pay, No Play" law?

Louisiana's "No Pay, No Play" law bars uninsured drivers from recovering the first portion of their damages after a crash, even when the other driver is entirely at fault.⁶ Lawmakers dramatically raised those thresholds in 2025.

For accidents on or after August 1, 2025, an uninsured driver generally cannot recover the first $100,000 of bodily injury damages or the first $100,000 of property damages, up from the previous $15,000/$25,000 thresholds.⁶ Statutory exceptions apply — for example, the restriction generally doesn't reach cases where the at-fault driver was intoxicated, fled the scene, or caused the crash intentionally.

Driving uninsured in Louisiana can leave you responsible for a substantial portion of your own losses, even when another driver causes the accident. That financial exposure can be far greater than the cost of maintaining minimum coverage.

What factors affect car insurance rates in Louisiana?

Louisiana insurers set premiums using several rating factors. The most influential include your driving record, age, annual mileage, vehicle make and model, ZIP code, and the coverage limits and deductibles you choose.

Here’s a look at some in more detail:

Location

Location matters more in Louisiana than in most states. Drivers in metro New Orleans typically pay more than drivers in rural parishes, reflecting differences in traffic density, theft, litigation rates, and flood exposure.

Credit

Credit history is also a permitted rating factor in Louisiana, and insurers may use a credit-based insurance score when pricing your policy.⁴ Maintaining strong credit alongside a clean driving record helps keep your rates down over time.

Driving Record

A clean driving record is the most reliable path to lower car insurance rates in Louisiana. Tickets, at-fault accidents, and major offenses like DUI signal a higher risk to insurers and trigger significant surcharges, as the table below shows.

A DUI carries consequences well beyond the premium increase, including license suspension and an SR-22 filing requirement that keeps rates elevated for years.

How can you find cheap car insurance in Louisiana?

In a high-cost state, comparing your options and claiming every discount matters even more. These steps can lower your costs:

  1. Shop and compare quotes. Rates for identical coverage vary dramatically between Louisiana carriers — the spread between the cheapest and most expensive averages above is more than $340 per month. Luva compares quotes in one place, so you see your full set of options.

  2. Bundle your policies. Insuring your auto and home, condo, or renters policies with the same carrier typically earns a multi-policy discount.

  3. Enroll in a telematics program. Usage-based programs track habits like braking, speed, and mileage, and reward safe drivers with lower premiums.

  4. Maintain good credit. Because credit-based insurance scores affect pricing in Louisiana, keeping your credit reports accurate and healthy supports lower rates.

  5. Raise your deductibles. Higher collision and comprehensive deductibles reduce your monthly premium — just make sure you can comfortably pay the deductible if you file a claim.

  6. Ask about every discount. Multi-car, good student, defensive driving, pay-in-full, and paperless billing discounts are widely available in Louisiana. Each is small on its own, but they stack.
